Barcelona Chair Despite its title, this layout was really born in Germany. Throughout the International Exposition in 1929, the country offered this entrance as an ode to the Expo's host town, Barcelona, Spain. The seat was a collaboration between two good design minds, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe and his longtime partner and companion small glass shower enclosures . Lilly Reich, a designer and architect in her own right. It's often cited as an icon of modern design. Its inspiration came from campaign and folding seats of early eras. Having a stainless steel frame, along with a cushioned, Bovine-leather chair and back, it is a popular selection of design-obsessed homeowners. The seat has been manufactured by Knoll since the 1950s.

Bergere Chair Usually associated with the nation French style of decorating (Marie Antoinette used them in her property), the Bergere armchair is characterized through an upholstered seat and back that is generally an overstuffed cushion. Its framework is a carved, "curvey" wood. They make terrific reading chairs and combine well with a number of other styles of furniture.

Chair-and-a-Half This in-between part of furniture is larger than a normal armchair but bigger than a loveseat -- ideal for all those awkward spaces at a home. An armchair, typically upholstered, is ideal for a family room or reading corner setting. It beckons to be sat on for a long movie or a good read.

Club Chair This armchair typically is a heavily upholstered style with a minimal back. Often the also arms are as large as the rear of this piece. The modern club seat relies upon the club chairs used by the fashionable and popular urban gentlemen's clubs of 1850s England. Today, they may be located in studies or household rooms -- awarded their sit-back-and-relax nature.

Eames Lounge Chair The entire title of the design is Eames Lounge 670, is generally paired with a matching ottoman (Eames Ottoman 671) -- making it a trendy resting place. The chair has a very low seat that is permanently in a recline. The seat of the chair swivels to a cast aluminum base, with slips which are threaded so that the chair may remain level. The piece was made by Charles and Ray Eames in the late 1950s for the Herman Miller furniture business. The first high-end piece designed by the duo, it's comprised of molded plywood and leather. The seat has the honor of becoming a part of the permanent collection at the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) in New York City. A mark of a smart, stylish character, it's made several renowned appearances on tv shows such as Mad Men, Frasier and House.

Egg Chair Designed by Arne Jacobsen in 1958, this bit was initially placed exclusively for the Radisson Hotel in Copenhagen, Denmark. Most design specialist agree the design was motivated by another chair, the Womb seat designed by Eero Saarinen, although the design might be a bit more baked. The piece was created as a couch as well, and they share the same traits such as the steel framework and fabric-covered seat. The form of the item seems to cradle the chair's occupant. It is curves reminiscent of an egg's shape. The Modernist masterwork was originally made in a green color, but today is fabricated in a number of colors.

Eames Plastic Chair Another classic design from the Eames design duo, this molded plastic chair has models with or without arms, along with a clean design that cradles the body. A metallic base supports the chair. The chair -- designed in 1948 -- is still manufactured now and comes in several colors and foundation layouts.

Fauteuil Chair This open-arm chair has a mostly exposed wood framework. The design was originated in France in the early 1700s. There is often a carved relief designs. The seat back and arms are upholstered. Often you will notice the timber frame painted and sometimes gilded -- befitting its first grand preferences. A Fauteuil is a superb chair to use at a desk or as accent in a formal living space.

Fiddle Back Chair Modeled on a Queen Anne design, this seat (found in early American Colonial homes) is defined by a rear splat shaped like a violin, fiddle, or curved vase. Typically the seat of this piece is made of rush (a woven pattern produced from the leaf of a cattail plant). The legs are carved and turned -- frequently with front and side stretchers to rest your feet.

Ghost Seat Aptly named for its see-through color, the bit marries old-world shape with contemporary materials. Manufactured exclusively by Kartell, the chair was conceived by famed designer Philipe Starck. Made of transparent or dyed polycarbonate, the chair is a mild and dramatic addition to a room. Its shape is readily recognizable: a Louis XVI (link to Louis XVI entry). Its flexible plastic substance make it a clear choice for outdoor use as well as an indoor desk chair.

Hoop Back Chair Produced at a few varying variations, this 18th-century all-wood chair is often called a "sack-back". The seat is characterized by the bowed or curved piece that rests beneath the spindle back, and stops at the sides of the chair. This style is actually a variant of the Windsor chair -- aptly named after the English town. Early American Windsor fashions had carved and turned ball and pipe legs.

Ladder-Back Chair Easily recognized by its back with horizontal slats or spindles, the wooden ladder-back is a utilitarian and rustic style that has a seat that is frequently caned or dashed. The seat was created from the Middle Ages but really became common in English houses in the 17th century. The migrated to colonial America after that and therefore are still a common site in many kitchens and dining rooms.

Louis XIV Chair Named after King Louis XI, (1638-1715) this chair is made of finely hand carved solid walnut. The large back and cushioned seat is larger to accommodate the more ample space needed by the styles of the day. Because the chair was born from this French Baroque period, the seat is typically covered in a rich tapestry, brocade or large design or velvet. It creates a dramatic and flavorful existence in any area.

Lyre Back Chair The centerpiece of the chair is the curved, rounded lyre arm which looks like the shape of lyre -- an early stringed musical instrument. Its source is from the Greek Classical period (starting circa 1700 AD). A lyre seat features a splat that is made of single lyre scrolls. The timber can be simple or elaborate in layout. Papasan Chair Also referred to as a mamasan or bowl seat, this is a large-rounded style with an angle like a futon. The bowl shape rests on frame made from rattan, typically. It has also been produced using a wood or wicker base. The papasan was released in the US around 1950 and really boomed from the casual and freethinking decade of the 1970s. The pillow is usually made of a cotton or velveteen filled with a cotton fluff. The metal or plastic frame usually folds into itself, allowing for easy storage and transportation. These folding kind designs are also called "moon seats".

Parsons Chair Much like the Name Implies the Parsons or Parson's Chair is directly linked to the Parsons School of Design in Paris, France. It was made from the 1930s; the mission of the design was to give comfort and flexibility when keeping a tidy, non-fussy silhouette. The armless chair has straight lines using a padded back and seat. This simple look makes it flexible enough for almost any room to be used as an accent chair.

Queen Anne Chair Named after the ruler who reigned over England from the 18th century, this style of furniture layout is marked by easy attributes like curvilinear lines, vasiform splats, and cabriole legs (one of four supports shaped in 2 curves; a single convex and the other concave). The chair of a Queen Anne chair is usually horseshoe-shaped. Carved scrolls and shells at the crown and knees of the piece also describe this design. The seat is typically upholstered.

Recliner Chair Surely the most comfortable of all upholstered armchairs, the classic recliner is characterized by a rear that can be lowered and a footrest which can be raised -- thanks to a lever on the side of the piece. The recliner was created in 1928 in Monroe, Michigan by cousins Edward Knabusch and Edwin Shoemaker. The firm, Floral Furniture was later renamed Lay-Z-Boy -- which is a common name for the style.

Side Chair This style has a straight-back and includes no arms. It's ordinarily used as a dining area seat for the sides of the dining room table. Slipper Chair The variety of chair is typically small, high-backed and upholstered. It has a low chair and is found in bedrooms. Despite some claims that the seat's low-slung shape resembles that of a shoe, its name comes from its ideal stature for sitting to put on footwear. Its low legs tend to be hidden with a skirt. Wingback Chair Also referred to as a wing chair, club chair, ear chair or grandfather chair. It's upholstered and has large "wings" mounted into the back reaching down to the elbows rest.
