about image

He uses a variety of American hardwoods in his designs and particularly   likes to use black walnut since they had been his favourite trees onto his great-grandparent's farm.

Jeff Devlin For among the Stone House Revival renovations, Jeff assembled this colonial-era secretary's seat. The desk features a hinged top that opens flat to create a writing surface and behind the double doors lies bookcase-style shelving. Jeff used a deep wine-colored stain for the desk then after staining the entire piece, he bothered the edges with glue. Putting the table next to the authentic bread oven with an antique cross-back chair makes for a snug writer's corner. See more photos of this historic renovation >>

Jeff Devlin A few feet out of Jeff's Pennsylvania farmhouse stays an old barn full of tools and retrieved wood of each shape and size. Some of Jeff's most cherished tools are those handed down from his father and grandfather. See more of his personal workshop >>

Jeff Devlin Jeff assembled this Colonial-style dining table from repurposed wood. It is a perfect addition to his lovely historic home. (His adorable St. Bernard dog favors the settee.)

Jeff Devlin Clint and his wife Kelly founded their company -- Harp Design Co -- out of their garage. Soon afterwards they moved with their three kids into Waco, Texas where Clint met HGTV celebrities Processor and Joanna Gaines. They were impressed by Clint's abilities, they hired him as the carpenter due to their hugely popular series Fixer Upper. His success on that show has directed him to star in his own TV series named  Against the Grain.   On Clint's show, he and his team create new one-of-a-kind furniture bits out of reclaimed wood.

Clint Harp Clint's specialty is farmhouse tables which are amazing to check at and yet at precisely the exact same time rustic enough that a stain or two won't matter. When designing these pieces unitized curtain wall system installation . his objective is bringing people together. Clint wants to make a gathering space for family meals, homework, art projects or simply sharing a cup of java. Within this formal dining room in a remodeled barn house, Clint made a 17-foot farm-style table to host a crowd.   Watch more of Clint's work from HGTV's Fixer Upper >>

Clint Harp Mark Bowe, host of DIY Network's Barnwood Builders, worked his way through West Virginia University as a coal miner, earning a bachelor's degree in business administration. Mark also holds a master's degree in safety management from WVU. He founded his firm, Antique Cabins and Barns, in 1995. He along with his hard-working crew have reclaimed over 400 pioneer-era structures. Mark says he's passionate about honoring the craft of America's ancestors and is devoted to ensure their hard work lives on for centuries to come.

Mark Bowe The series Barnwood Builders follows Mark and his fun-loving West Virginia crew as they search for hand-hewn antique log cabins and barns. They recover up to old structures since they could then restore and reconstruct them in a brand new location.

Mark Bowe On one of Mark's rebuild endeavors, the crew set up a salvaged stained-glass window in a rebuilt timber chapel situated in Kentucky.

Mark Bowe Here, Mark stands in the center of a stacked hand-hewn log cabin in South Carolina.   Notice the tags on each log. When Mark and his crew tear down a cottage or barn, then they thoroughly tag each log so that when they reconstruct the arrangement they understand which bit goes where.

Mark Bowe Rosemary started her art course later in life. She spent years in a prosperous high-stakes, high-stress business and then eventually one day needed to face the question "if not today, then when?" Rosemary took a massive leap of faith and followed her soul's craving for her true passion. "I think of my mission as to uplift, to bring a boost of pleasure, positive power and joy into a distance and into the people who encounter it," says Rosemary. "The fantastic thing about shape and colour is that any person of any age can appreciate the combination and can sense the happy vibes"

Rosemary Pierce This work, called "Lyrical Circles" was commission for a private home. "It was inspired by the notion of lively, interesting sculptural circles demonstrating free-spirited movement and saying," says Rosemary. "Made from timber, paint and lacquer, the lyrical circles have a superb feeling of free-floating from the wall, as every circle is attached into a sculptural wooden block on the trunk. The block is not visible but provides this fantastic sculptural depth and impact."

Rosemary Pierce Rosemary created this piece, called "Light My Fire" to get a hotel lobby in downtown Dallas. "This job was inspired by the notion of abstract matches installed in a round starburst pattern to represent fire, sunshine, lively flaming energy," explains Rosemary. "Made from wood, metal, plaster, paint and lacquer. I took wooden dowels and built up layers of plaster onto the tips, then coated into shape to get my matchstick look.     I then painted each piece at a gradient of deep dark red on the tips through reds, to apples, to yellows."

Rosemary Pierce This installation -- called "Over the Harbor" -- was made for a penthouse at Baltimore. Rosemary explains it is a component of her "Stick Together" series which is created from various thickness and sized wooden dowels. "Each piece is polished to pull out the richness of this pure timber, then one dipped into paint constructed into layers" Watch more of Rosemary's job >>

Rosemary Pierce EJ Osborne researched product and furniture design, but soon afterward realized a life sitting behind a monitor wasn't because of him. He especially did not want to design things for mass manufacturing and sending unnecessary products out into an already crowded world of stuff. After a frenzied bout of "manufacturer's itch" -- the need to make -- EJ undergone his aha moment and realized that handcarving was his calling.

EJ Osborne Using just 3 tools -- a little axe, a straight-edge knife and a crook knife -- EJ may shape a branch to some useful utensil. Here, EJ begins to carve a spoon from a bent branch. He forages all of his own substances -- which essentially means taking a stroll in the woods.

EJ Osborne EJ provides spoon carving workshops near his house in Southeast England. The weekend-long course occurs in the forests. Pupils sit around the campfire all day, carving and drinking coffee. In the day, craft ales and marshmallows are enjoyed around the flame. If you can not make it into England for the workshop, then have a look at EJ's Spoon Carving publication. It has detailed job instructions, plus tips on everything from how to harvest and store wood to maintaining your creations for many years to come.

EJ Osborne The act of dividing is meditative and relaxing. It is all about the art of slow living; working with your hands and a slice of nature to make something amazing and useful. Take a peek at EJ's site, Hatchet and Bear, to find out more of his work. Many of the designs are offered in Anthropologie UK and The Conran Shop.

EJ Osborne John McGilvray has been building furniture and designing custom kitchens and libraries for over 25 decades. He started out as a journeyman doing restoration work on historic home on Long Island's Gold Coast. John then moved to Tennessee where he began his own business working on high-end residential houses.

John McGilvray In this kitchen, John was able to blend new and old together in a complex way. The timber on the hood vent, and the corbels and siding on the middle island were all once part of a barn that stood on the house's property. "The property has been in family for many generations, so it meant a lot to the homeowners that they were able to incorporate a part of family history in their new modern home," states John. John McGilvray John custom designed this sophisticated French-country design for a family that moved from New Orleans to East Tennessee. For these homeowners, the number-one want on their record was a large center island on one level with lots of seating and work surface at which the entire family can eat and cook together. This island and its own single slab of marble offers space for five stools, lots of storage, and a full-size sink. John managed to provide the household the role they desired while integrating design touches that give a nod to their native Southern Louisiana. Watch more of this kitchen >>

John McGilvray Kyle is a fourth-generation woodworker who followed his enthusiasm, in addition to his lineage into furniture design. He believes in the importance of passing down things, so that he designs furniture that will stand the test of time in both design and utility. Kyle has a diploma in civil engineering, but rather than going down the expect career path, he decided to use his abilities to construct midcentury-modern motivated furniture.

Kyle Huntoon Kyle's handcrafted mid-mod designs landed him a spot on Ellen DeGeneres' hit show Ellen's Design Challenge. On the show, Ellen includes a select group of designers (Kyle is on the left) compete in a variety of challenges designing and building furniture.

Kyle Huntoon Kyle is motivated by the clean geometric lines of mid-century modern layout and loves to incorporate traditional joinery methods in his work. He uses a variety of American hardwoods in his designs and particularly   likes to use black walnut since they had been his favourite trees onto his great-grandparent's farm. Here, Kyle works with DIY Network's accredited contractor Matt Muenster (right) to assemble the finger-jointed parts of a walnut timber chair made for Ellen's Design Challenge.

Kyle Huntoon Katie Jackson studied visual art at Bennington College and was trained at New England School of Architectural Woodworking's Cabinetmaking Career Training.   She spent many years teaching woodworking to at-risk adolescent girls. Katie specializes in assembling elastic outdoor furniture, a lot of which is made from recycled materials.

Katie Jackson Katie created this poolside lounger having an adjustable back rest. The tapered-corner brace legs provide this classic slatted design a modern twist.

Katie Jackson When building these sectional pieces, Katie was inspired by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) work back in the 1930s and early 1940s. When the CCC built our national parks that they used simple horizontal lines using a practical purpose that blended in with the natural surroundings. This seat, ottoman and lounge are a nod to that National Park Service Rustic appearance (aka -- Parkitecture).
